Getting Started With JEE

It’s the aspiration of every student and dream of every parent. IIT JEE – one of the toughest engineering entrance of its kind in the world – is what is the hurdle to cross to study in one of the IITs. So what does it take to crack JEE? What are the golden rules? What a student should have in him/her to make it? These are the very first questions that always arise in a student’s mind and most of the times it makes them confused. In this post , I’ll be answering all these questions and pinpoint basic methodologies and strategies you should stick to.
To begin with, first things first, always keep in mind everybody is different. What may work out perfectly for one person may not work at all for another. So it’s very important right from the beginning that don’t rush with the crowd, try to find out your strengths and weaknesses and then contemplate what will work out best for you. It doesn’t take a genius to crack JEE. An average student can easily crack JEE given he/she follows the right strategy and applies the right methodologies. And if you give your best in preparations there is nothing that can stop you from becoming an IITian.
Dedication is one of the utmost important things for clearing JEE. You wake up every other day and the first thing that you should see is JEE, your aim. You should be able to visualize the road ahead to travel to reach your aim successfully. Listen to other people, listen to those who have succeeded but never pay attention to those who discourage you. It is you who has the capability to do anything and others are not going to do it for you. Always have a high self-confidence. Try to imitate the best practices of those who have succeeded in the past. Talk to any senior who has succeeded in cracking JEE. You will always get some useful tips that will help a lot in your preparation. These are small points but sometimes they make the difference.
Have a disciplined routine and always take proper sleep. Healthy mind resides in a healthy body. There is no need to burn midnight oil everyday. Going early to bed and coming early from bed was always a good practice and it’s good if you can bring it into your daily routine. You will feel fresh after a good sleep and will be able to devote quality time towards the preparation. Do some light exercises in the morning.
Now we’ll be discussing something related to strategies and methodologies that I mentioned at the start of this post. Any important project needs planning and this is no different. You should start with a plan and I’ll tell you how to build one. On a broader scale you need to have a long term plan and then divide that into short term plans say weekly plans. Usually people have a full 2 years ahead of them and that time should be covered in the long term plan. In the long term plan you can divide your subjects topic-wise like which topic to cover in what time duration. At the start you willn’t be able to do that so easily, so take help from some senior. It’s highly important that you keep flexibility in your long term plan and don’t let it become very imposed on you like a burden. Making a plan is just to ensure that you keep the target in your mind and pick the right arrows at the right time to hit the target. It makes you disciplined. Don’t try to keep concentrating on one subject continuously for days. It’s important that it doesn’t get monotonous and boring for you. So it’s good practice to switch subjects after some time.
JEE always tests basic concepts but through numerical and very intelligently weaved problems which sometimes encompass a variety of topics in one. First try to grasp basic concepts in any topic and then practice a lot of problems related to that topic. You need to know all the ins and outs of any topic. Always try to visualize what correlations topics can have. You don’t need to start from the most toughest problem at the beginning. Start with some simple problems which clarify your concepts and then go for tougher problems where you can confidently apply the concepts learned. It is always a cyclic process where you learn something new about a particular concept from a very nicely framed problem which you were not able to grasp earlier by just reading theory. Lot of practice in solving problems after reading theory is a must and reading only theory and not solving problems related to it is a suicidal practice.

Enough said in this post, in the next post I’ll be concentrating on following topics:
*How to attack a particular problem till you solve it (There is no problem you can’t solve on your own if your foundations are strong)
*How to build short term plans
*Some highly recommended books
*Special post for freshers
